"THE DIRT"
02/16/08
Hola,
Have you ever been in a
relationship with a person that has the same personality type as your own?
If so, you have some idea of what it's like to be in a band. Except that you
have to relate to three or more other clones of said personality as well
(think Michael Keaton's character in Multiplicity). Trying to keep a band on
an even keel with that many like-minded individuals can be incredibly
frustrating at times if not downright impossible. This band was formed in
the winter of 2000 by Daren Ware and John Phillips (technically, it was
formed when these two were in high school but that gets waaayyyy too
sordid). Anyway, Daren and John re-connect in the winter of 2000 along with
Dave Kleba on drums and Steve Carter on bass and call themselves Thunderbox.
Lost the drummer to substance abuse... Auditions... Pick up Chris (last
name escapes me) and won the battle of the bands at the 2001 Thunderfest at
the Roostertail... Replaced the bass player with said
bass player's younger brother Larry... More gigs... Lose drummer to
substance abuse... Auditions, yawns... Insert Larry's friend from another
band on drums (damn, I can't even remember this guys first name)...
Even more gigs, alcohol and lost brain cells... Band falls apart due to lack
of constructive communication... Daren and John join forces with Matt Cox
and Steve Gobie and an awesome band called Brutal Truth is formed with Daren
on bass and vocals, Matt and John on guitar and Steve on drums... Great
reviews and a following starts... More great gigs... Drummer MIA (at least we didn't lose this one to substance abuse)... Daren
and John enlist the talents of drummer Jim Paulie and bassist
extraordinaire, Dave Chmelko from Tastes Like Chicken and continue to rock
asses around town under the pseudonym Brutal Chicken (Note: Mr. Chmelko
has been on retainer for several years now and has been integral in keeping
this band going in the interim, thanks bro!) ... The band changes the format a little
with this grouping and their material is heavy on dance songs which they
find out eventually aren't as well-received as their specialty, rock and
roll... Hire "the Crusher" (I think his name was Jim or something...) on
bass and do even more girly-tunes... Band fizzles out... In the summer of
2005, Daren and John re-connect with former bandmates Matt Cox and Steve
Gobie and enlist the help of Dave Chmelko on bass yet again just to keep it rolling...
Unfortunately, they can't come up with anything more provocative than Dirty
Sanchez for a name... Many more asses rocked... Auditions... Steve Lepisto
(former bass player for 60 Cycle Hum),
an incredibly talented musician, is convinced to join the band (seriously, I
think we shamed him into it)... Steve Gobie quits the band...
Auditions ensue... Dominic Ciolino is referred to us by a friend and pulls
40+ songs together in a few weeks to help out with pending gigs. Things
click and he joins the band to round out what is undoubtedly the tightest
and most communicative lineup this band has seen. What a concept, a group of
five talented individuals with no ego problems. No, really.
And a year and a half
later we are still going strong with the same lineup, More bars rocked and
many more asses rocked as well. Stay tuned in as this could go on for some
time..
